Australian Swing Dance Championships

Join in the fun and excitement of competing in the Australian Swing Dancing Championships! A variety of events will cater for all level of dancers and give everyone a chance of taking home a National Title.

Training and participating in competitions is a great way to progress with your own dancing and working towards a goal is a great motivator to take your dancing to the next level. The support and friendship between fellow dancers within the competition will encourage you to perform at your best.

The Australian Swing Dancing Championships are open to all to enter. We will not discriminate nor Judge any dancer on gender, race, sexuality, or religious beliefs. We invite and encourage all dancers to enter and have the freedom to dance as lead or follow. We just want to see you swing out and have fun on the dance floor!

All Heats and Finals will be held on Friday night at the Ashfield Polish Club.

Details

BALBOA

Competitors must register as a couple and may dance both Balboa and Bal Swing.

Heats: Couples will dance one all skate of 1.5-2 minutes duration. Finals: 30 second unjudged all skate to warm up, followed by two shines (jam format). Each shine will be four phrases long. The second shine will be followed by an all skate to the end of the song.

Love the quicker tempos, and flying feet? This is the event for you. This event will showcase the wild, crazy, anything goes feeling of Lindy Hop. Competitors must register as a couple.

Heats: Couples will dance one all skate of 1.5-2 minutes duration. Finals: 30 second unjudged all skate to warm up, followed by two shines (jam format). Each shine will be two phrases long. The second shine will be followed by an all skate to the end of the song.

BPM’s will range from 190 - 250bpm.

LINDy HOP APPRENTICE

Competitors must register as a couple. Both lead and follow must be over the age of 18 years. Both dancers must have been dancing Lindy Hop under 2 years.

Basic Lindy Hop moves should be displayed. Liftwork is permitted, however must be danced in a safe manner. Liftwork must also not interfere with fellow competitors on the dance floor.

Heats: Couples will dance one all skate of 1.5-2 minutes duration. Final: Couples will dance one all skate of 1.5-2 minutes duration.

Collegiate Shag

Competitors must enter as a couple. Event is open to all levels of dancers, both amateur and professional.

Collegiate Shag basics and moves should be displayed. Liftwork is permitted, however must be danced in a safe manner. Liftwork must also not interfere with fellow competitors on the dance floor.

Heats: Couples will dance one all skate of 1.5-2 minutes duration. Finals: 30 second unjudged all skate to warm up, followed by three shines (jam format). Each shine will be two phrases long. The third shine will be followed by an all skate to the end of the song.

BPM’s will range from 190 - 250bpm.

mix n match

Mix n Match is the event to show your skills as a great lead or follow, and the versatility you hold as a dancer. The ability to dance with any partner is the ultimate skill of a swing dancer – this is after all, a social dance.

We encourage everyone to enter this event. Feel free to dance as a lead or a follow, regardless of gender.

Heats: Competitors will dance 3 x 1.5-2 minute all skates with three different partners. Competitors will be judged individually. Finals: 30 second unjudged all skate to warm up, followed by two shines (jam format). Each shine will be two phrases long. The second shine will be followed by an all skate to the end of the song. Competitors will be judged as a couple.

SOLO JAZZ

This is the event to show the energy, excitement and creative freedom that is Solo Jazz. Dancers will be judged on their musicality, timing, and creativity with Solo Jazz movements.

Heats: Competitors will dance one all skate of 1.5-2 minutes duration. Finals: 30 second unjudged all skate to warm up, followed by two shines (jam format). Each shine will be four phrases long. The second shine will be followed by an all skate to the end of the song.

STRICTLY LINDY HOP

Competitors must enter as a couple, and both the lead and follow must be over 18 years of age.

Lindy Hop moves should be displayed. Liftwork is permitted, however must be danced in a safe manner. Liftwork must also not interfere with fellow competitors on the dance floor.

TEAMS EVENT

Minimum of three couples per team. Teams to provide their own music, with a minimum song length of 2.15mins and a maximum of 3.45mins. Props may be incorporated within the performance, however may not affect the dance floor surface. Props must also be set up and removed from the competition dance floor area in a timely manner. Music to be provided to the competition DJ at least one day before the scheduled event per the details which will be sent in the competitor email. No responsibility will be taken for music files that will not play, through standard music players.

Judging

Judges will be looking at the following components when judging and placing competitors.

– Timing/rhythm
– Musicality
– Showmanship
– Variety/content
– Basic movements of dance style
– Degree of difficulty
– Creativity
– Dance connection
– Costumes

Rules are designed simply to create a safe and fair dance space. We are wanting to see dancers/couples highlight the creative freedom that Swing Dancing allows us.

Adult: $40 per person (incl. event entry)
